XMFC recs
Just importing these over from another one of my comms.

Your Baby is my Supermagnet (My Baby is Your Drug) by unforgotten (WIP) - On the eve of Cuba, Erik and Charles unknowingly impregnate each other. Months later, the babies' powers manifest in utero, making pregnancy that much more awkward for Charles - but dangerous for Erik. When this results in Erik being dragged back to Charles against his will, the two could have a chance to repair their devastated relationship, if only they have the sense to try; but there's not much sense between them, so they're going to need a little push....

The epic mpreg fic of EPICNESS. You know you love it. Charles has his shit together, Erik is a wooby, and the babies are the most mature people in the entire fic. It's fucking awesome.

The Tower and the Hurricane by dreamlittleyo (41,572k words) - (Post-movie AU.) Five years after Shaw's death, Erik's predictions prove painfully accurate. Violence rages on both sides of the human/mutant conflict. In a world ravaged by war, it doesn't really matter who's more at fault. Charles struggles to teach his students a better way, but what choices will he make when peace really isn't an option?

I adore "when things go bad" fic, and this one is perhaps the best of them all. Charles' feelings of hopelessness and guilt are really well done without being over the top, and I adore the way he clings to his convictions, even as the world shows him that his ideals aren't worth a damn in the cold light of reality.

For I Mean to Conquer Troy by twelve_pastels (34,570k words) - Set one year post movie, Charles overloads himself in Cerebro, and his mind goes walkabout; wherever he is (and he’s around), it’s not in his body. Erik temporarily takes over the school in his absence, and finds that there’s little time for resentment or hatred when he’s busy organizing assigned reading for English lit, keeping the youngest children out of trouble, and trying to talk Raven into wearing clothing for the boys’ sake. Somewhere in between taking responsibility for the students and dreaming Charles’ dreams every night, he manages to remember that he’s something rather more than a weapon. In other words: A Love Story between two Gentlemen, told in Prose, Epistles, and Nonsense Rhymes.

One of the first XMFC fics I read, and I think it set the tone of the fandom for me. It's one of my favorite Erik/Charles fic, for all that Charles isn't even IN the story until the end.

An Ideal Grace by afrocurl & nekosmuse (86,191k words) - Erik Lehnsherr is a visiting professor at Columbia University, as well as an acclaimed and award winning poet. Charles Xavier is a lead researcher with the Genetics Department who is well on his way to tenure. But what happens when Charles has to cancel a class because half his students abandon him in favour of a mysterious new English Lit professor? Naturally he ends up sitting in in the class, where Professor Lehnsherr mistakes him for a student. It's really too bad Erik has such a strict policy against dating students. It's also too bad Erik doesn't seem to know how to use Google.

I usually shy away from non-canon!verse AUs, but this is a really great fic. Charles is such a dork in it too, and Erik really just needs a hug. There's an awesome outtakes fic, as well as a sequel, which I have yet to read.

lay down beside me (so still and so soft) by c_gracewood (~52 000k words) - A different take on the events of the film.

Kay, let me just say, I LOVE this fic. The development of their relationship, with Charles trying to tiptoe through the minefield of Erik's issues, and Erik learning not to let those issues hold him back is just perfect. Not to mention the author's take on Cuba, which is more than a little heartbreaking all on it's own.

Nation Building and other Diplomatic Negotiations by Pookaseraph (WIP) - With the recent passage of a submissive registration law in the United Kingdom, there are now only two industrialized nation with a relatively stable government to have neither a mutant nor a submissive registration law. Erik Lehnsherr, the newly minted King of Genosha, and his Prime Minister Emma Frost intend to take advantage of this turn of events to bring the Xavier Institute to the island nation of Genosha. They both know bringing Charles Xavier, the noted activist of mutant and submissive rights, to the island will necessarily politicize the man, and create all manner of complications. With a constitution not yet finalized and external threats to Genoshan security all around them, Erik, Emma, and Charles will fight for what they believe in to shape Genosha into what it should be. A Genosha AU with moderate D/s elements.

This is still in progress (A little more than half done, if I recall correctly), but I found it utterly worth reading just for the political aspects of it. The world building and character development is really very well done, and the dom/sub aspect adds a subtext to the complicated relationship between Erik and Charles. I just can't wait to see how the author handles certain revelations being shared.

Forgive Us Our Transgressions by PoorMedea (34,752k words) - The mind is a strange place, as Charles knows all too well. Memories come and go, and sometimes are wiped away forever. is this finally the chance he's been waiting for? When Magneto comes down with a terrible illness, the Brotherhood turns to the only mutant they know who can help—Hank McCoy. Unfortunately, this leaves Magneto at the doorstep of Charles Xavier: former friend, former lover, current adversary. When Charles discovers that the illness has left Erik with no memories of what came before, he is left with a choice: To return Magneto to the Brotherhood, or to keep Erik for himself.

Every fandom has its amnesia fic, and they're usually not that well done. The part of this I like the most isn't even the look at what Erik might have been without the camp and Shaw hanging over his head, but the opinions he holds, even without his memories, and how they affect him later, when he tries to go back to being Magneto again.
